Why a New Framework?
Over the past few years, Helpful has evolved from an open innovation response network to a structured, mission-driven innovation community. With pressing challenges ranging from climate change to global health threats, we need to ensure our community is working on the right problems — ones that are urgent, validated, and open to diverse solutions.
Our new framework ensures every challenge we publish is:
- Rooted in evidence — not just assumptions or anecdotes.
- User-aware and contextualized — informed by real-world constraints and needs.
- Opportunity-driven — designed to seed a pipeline of multiple, complementary solutions.
How It Works: Our Challenge Development Process
We use a comprehensive 5-step research and scoping method to define each challenge:
- Problem Definition
- What’s the precise problem, and who is affected?
- Is the problem scale and urgency backed by data?
- User Groups & Pain Points
- Who are the primary and secondary users?
- What are their daily constraints, workarounds, or unmet needs?
- Market & Access Gap
- Why aren’t current solutions adequate, affordable, or adaptable?
- Where do existing tools fail in real contexts?
- Requirements both Performance & Regulatory
- Are there standards or safety specifications solutions must meet?
- What are the regulatory pathways or bottlenecks?
- Challenge Framing for Opportunity
- Is the challenge open enough to support 3–10 projects?
- Is it framed without bias toward a single solution?
We also apply extended criteria including environmental stress factors, equity and accessibility, policy alignment, and the potential for technology transfer and local manufacturability.
